MVP Insider Archive: February 2004

Qi Ma - Beijing, China
Most Valuable Professional, Visual Developer, C++
Qi Ma works as a product manager for AirZip, Inc. and has been an MVP since 2003. He’s been awarded "Best Contribution" by the Microsoft China office, as well as featured as a guest speaker at the Microsoft Club of Beijing University. He’s been a certified trainer in Windows Server, WinCE/.NET, and Embedded/Mobile for four years and participated in a number of beta tests including Whidbey and Office 2003.
What does MVP mean to you?
Certainly, the MVP title is a great honor and I was very excited to receive the designation. I love to code and my skills as an accomplished coder improve every day. I like the challenge of fi guring out the problems that come my way, using my own knowledge. Being an MVP, I have an opportunity to learn by helping others, increase my personal technological vision, and improve my abilities in software development. It’s great to write code, and let my best MVP friends try it to see if it works! The MVP program gives me the chance to improve my ability and give more help to others, which is something I enjoy.
If you could ask Steve Ballmer one question about Microsoft, what would it be?
I’ve heard it said that a successful enterpriser can distinguish the truly successful when there are so many creative ideas that are born from him. Steve Ballmer is one of those truly successful people. I want to ask him what his secret is.
What do you think the best software ever written was?
My development ability is improving every day and the best software ever written is the one I am working on now-the FileSecure of AirZip Inc. As I get better at coding, I will write better programs in the future, but I am very happy with the strength of this code.
If you were the manager of Visual Developer, what would you change?
If I ever got a chance to do this, I would separate the VS.net into many smaller tools by roles, just like VS6. Software developers could then use different tools in different languages, and everyone could keep their custom code and use all the tools together.
If you were given unlimited data bandwidth, what would you do with it?
I want to hold a Net meeting with all of my friends all over the world. We could talk with each other as if we were in a big room. It would make for a veryinteresting party! I would also like to deliver my computer courses over the Internet. I have been a Microsoft Certifi ed Trainer for four years, but have yet to deliver courses this way. I can’t imagine how much more exciting education would be!
What’s was the last book you read?
I am reading Writing Secure Code by Michael Howard and David LeBlanc now. It’s required reading at Microsoft.
What music CD do you recommend?
Being a romantic at heart, I like the song "I Swear" by the group All-For-One the best. I like the love that comes out in that song. It shows the signifi canceof life in sharing our success with others through a lifetime commitment. The other music I enjoy very much is classical. I like Beethoven and Karajan very much. The Tripelkonzert (Triple Concerto) is my favorite. I have two versions of it; one is the classic version performed by David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Sviatoslav Richter, the other is a more contemporary version performed by Anne- Sophie Mutter, Mark Zeltser, and Yo Yo Ma.
What’s in your computer bag?
Well, this is a hard question to answer. I have two bags; in one I carry my TabletPC which goes everywhere with me, I even have it near me when I sleep. I use this for day-to-day work because it is so convenient. In my briefcase, I carry only the Dell Inspiron 8000, and use that for heavy coding. As far as software on both machines that I can’t live without? I like the MSN Messenger best. In my opinion, the software of MSN Messenger is my most powerful tool; it keeps me connected to my team and provides easy and quick communication that is always powerful when you’re writing code.
What’s the best thing that has happened since you’ve become an MVP?
The best thing is I get more adoration than ever from my girlfriend. We have been in love for two years, and although my relationship with her is not a result of becoming an MVP, the title is helpful to our relationship. She is very proud of the accomplishment, and because so many great things have happened as a result of becoming an MVP, she can’t understand what I did before I became an MVP! I am not comfortable with this kind of adoration from her, but I am happy that I get it!
What is your motto?
Honesty and diligence should be your eternal mates.
Who is your hero?
Bill Gates is a Super Hero in my mind. I think that Bill was born with a seventh sense and somehow knows the future to have led his Microsoft to such success. I want to be Bill!
What does success mean to you?
You can be successful in one of two ways - lead a team to success or be in a successful team. The keyword is team. Teams provide the chance to surround yourself with brilliance and gain more knowledge than you could on your own. Teams can also help you make the right decisions quickly by offering their own experiences as examples.
