What does MVP mean to you? When speaking of MVPs, people often think of sports MVPs, but the Microsoft MVP is quite different. Microsoft MVPs are certainly not as glamorous as sports MVPs, but we are definitely contributing to building a safe, practical, and promising future with our technical strength. Embedded MVPs are professionals who devote themselves to analyzing customers’ systematic needs and developing software or hardware to fulfill those needs. If you could ask Steve Ballmer one question about Microsoft, what would it be?I think that it would be interesting for Microsoft and semiconductor manufacturing to work together on developing an application-oriented Integrated Controller (IC). So, I would like to address this question with Steve because it requires time and effort to optimize full functioning of OS and IC since those were developed separately. It would be much more efficient to develop OSs and ICs under the same concept. What do you think the best software ever written was?Within the OS category, I would choose Windows NT. I first read about Windows NT development in a book called "SHOWSTOPPER!", which was quite interesting. When considering system architecture, I would select Dynamically Variable Instruction Set Architecture (DVAITA.) This technology automatically extracts sections within a C-written application that requires a time-consuming process (e.g., loop), and sends it to a designated hardware such as FPGA or ASIC.If you were the manager of Microsoft® Windows® Embedded, what would you change?I would pre-register all allowed processes required to dictate the complete behavior of the embedded machine, and restrict all non-registered processes as a security countermeasure. This would completely block virus attacks and spyware execution. I would also consider changing the reference "Windows Embedded" by soliciting public opinion and determining which name they would find most recognizable. | If you were given unlimited data bandwidth, what would you do with it?First, I would create a wearable device that is capable of simultaneous interpretation, enabling one to understand any language that was heard or read. This type of application would require a super fast database search engine and Artificial Intelligence, but if I had infinite data processing power, real-time translation would be achievable.Secondly, I would utilize a huge network storage server to create a virtual PC environment that would duplicate the work or home environment. While this is possible with current technology, limited bandwidth prevents it from being achieved easily. This environment would allow users to feel at home regardless of their location and could be delivered through various applications such as a PC, KIOSK terminal, or Windows Mobile® cell phone. What was the last book you read?Mostly I am reading software-related material. Sometimes I read cookbooks, but have not progressed much. Although I still have aspirations of making a great Indian curry! What music CD do you recommend? My first recommendation is AC/DC’s "Back in Black", straight rock music that makes me feel good. I played "Back in Black" in a Roppongi bar and it was a blast. I also like the solo CD "Tilt" by Cozy Powell, a genius rock drummer who used to play with Rainbow and the Michel Schenker group. What makes you a great MVP?Before Microsoft started to work with Windows Embedded, I had proposed system architecture to embedded system by Windows NT. At first, I encountered much difficulty in helping people understand how to utilize Windows as an embedded system. However, gradually I was able to garner support and recognition among others. Initially, Venturcom’s Component Integrator enabled Windows NT for embedded system OS, then Microsoft licensed the technology and it became Windows NT Embedded. Since the development of Windows XP Embedded, I have been a trainer and lecturer for seminars in Japan.Through my association with Windows CE, I am proud that I was able to create Network projector, a new category to research middleware development needs for an embedded projector; look for WESTTEK and apply their current technology. Currently, both SONY and SEIKO EPSON successfully apply this technology. The company where I work, Tokyo Electron Device Limited, has SDIO core technology. As a Windows Embedded community lead and MVP, I have been a tireless advocate of the SDIO value to Microsoft, and Microsoft has finally adopted SDIO to Windows CE as a standard. | What’s in your computer bag?In my computer bag you will find: laptops, Windows Mobile terminal (i-maite; I remodel Jasjar English version to Japanese version), PHS for mobile data communication, 3G mobile phone, Toshiba Giga Beat HDD audio player, Bose QuietComfort 2 headset, a guitar pick and probably a few other things. What is the best thing that has happened since you have become an MVP?The best experience has been the opportunity to attend the MVP Summit and hear from Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and many others. Also, my MVP status has provided the chance to talk to many worldwide MVPs and Microsoft development members. I consider it great fun to exchange views on various technical themes with other MVPs even though our competencies may be different. What is your motto?"First challenge anything! If you fail, then learn from it." I try to not do the same thing as others and choose not to accommodate myself to public opinion. From my point of view, we need to encourage the development of unique ideas in order to improve the situation in the world.Who is your hero?I consider my father to be my hero, not only because he is an engineer and speaks English well, but also because he frequently traveled abroad for business. Witnessing his keenness to study various fields, even while at home, has influenced me to see the importance of continuing study after graduation. What does success mean to you?I aspire to have a good influence on my family and friends in any way possible. I will consider myself successful if my influence on others is such that they observe my faults and yet still want to learn from me or emulate me in some way. This could be achieved through the pursuit of any my favorite activities, whether it be work or a hobby – anything for which I have a passion. |
